Kim's Prayer

"We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed." --2 Corinthians 4:8-9

Stand-in Blogger

Kim and I got back late last night from Houston and spent most of our time touring Texas airports, so she hasn't had much time to let you know what's going on. Here's where I come in. Just the facts, the scripture revelations, I'll leave to her.

Generally, we got a very good report. The cancer is still localized in her shoulder, with no sign of spreading. The better news, for us, is that we're going to be able to take the first round of chemo here in Jonesboro. Kim is at the Surgery Center right now (around noon) having surgery to repair her port (it's not going the direction it needs to) so she can begin the treatments immediately, we think it will start next week.

The treatments will be every week for eight weeks. Then we'll go back to Houston for another round of scans to see what effect the chemo had on the cancer that is still there. Depending upon that-- surgery, radiation and possibly another follow-up chemo treatment will be on the horizon.

On a side note, apparently Kim's thyroid gland had stopped working at some point. The doctor said that in the patients MD Anderson has seen that have had this happen (not very often, only a very few), the response to chemo has been dramatically better and they're just now trying to figure out why. This, Kim declares, is a "God thing."

Thank you again for all of your prayers and concerns. We're seeing it at work in our lives daily.

Mark

Forgive me for my ignorance - How sick will this chemo make Kim feel?

How can we help - i.e. what kinds of foods can she eat (or if nothing appeals to her - what is your (and the kids') favorite.

Please, let us know when and how we can help with kids, meals, chores, etc. (I'd even run a vacuum - that's how much we love you guys).

Just call whenever you need anything!!!!

We will defintely get meals organized-you let us know when. That is an encouraging report and I am so glad to keep praying specifically for a positive response to the chemo. Isn't it something at how God uses what would seemingly be a negative thing (thyroid issue) and turn it into something that would help Kim even more. If I can take the kids to school or anything, just let me know-we're close.

Sounds like a plan! Hope you get started and all goes well.

to your friends who will ask what to do to help....

meals for the family are great...but let me suggest a few things they can do to make it even better. 1)always take disposable dishes or pans 2) food coupons are just as good as a full meal...kid stuff like pizza or burgers. This is great when Mom wants to stay home and Dad needs to take the kids out for a while. 3) a grocery or walmart run for essentials like paper towels and toilet paper are wonderful!
4) pretty stationary or thank you notes
5) stamps
6)I remember my friends joining together and getting me a lovely chest to keep all the cards and notes in. I still have it 8 years later and treasure it.
7) CD's, books

remember that it's a marathon, not a sprint. take time to rest and try not to be around germs while your white counts are low.

hang in there and if you have questions email me swcall@cox-internet.com

Sounds like a positive start. Our class will get plenty of meals to you through this process. We don't want you guys to have any needs but prayer so please let us know if there is anything we can do. I would love to go to the grocery, clean dishes, take the kids home-anything! We are all praying and God is working!

Thanks for the update. God IS in control and holding you in the palm of his hand. Kim, one of my homeroom student's mom is from Pocohantas and knows you! Her married name is Baltz - sorry, don't know the maiden name. Son is Zac. He was laughing about a tale his mom was telling about some field getting sprayed orange with "PHS" sprayed in the middle of it - does that sound familiar??? :) The fifth grade is praying daily. I love you guys. Blanche
